MOUNTAIN AND FILM LOVERS-- Sunday November 1st—the West Point Inn Association proudly presents the 2022 restored version of Blind Husbands an alpine love-triangle by the Inn’s day-laborer and soon-to-be acclaimed film director Erich “von” Stroheim.  His time spent at our mountaintop Inn inspired his 1919 silent film-- where spilt soup led to a short term marriage and finally the script for his wildly successful first movie.   With this film presentation the West Point Inn seeks to reunite the film with its Tamalpais inspiration, linking film, conservation, history and geography…but mostly have a good time!   LINK TO TICKETS! Blind Husbands, a silent from 1919, is an alpine thriller masquerading as a morality play of good and evil with the Director himself playing the Satanic predator to a neglected wife.  Climax is reached in a deadly rock-climb to the Pinnacle where all secrets are revealed and the moral order reestablished—or are they?.      Despite its setting in a quaint village in the Alps,  the film is decidedly Californian.  Filmed in the alpine peaks surrounding Palm Springs as well as an elaborate back lot village at Universal Studios,  the film portrays the wayward charms of a mountaintop hikers' lodge, with costumes, deadly rock climbing and socializing not unlike  Mount Tamalpais in 1919 during its ferry-to-rail-to-hiking heyday.  The resemblance of the mountain lodge sets, the party atmosphere and the pristine surroundings resonate with the three century-old hikers’ lodges who share Mount Tamalpais--the West Point Inn, the California Alpine Lodge and the Nature Friends Tourist Club.  In both decor and spirit, the settings recognize the compatibility of alpine wander-lust and the irresistible attraction of the California landscape to generations of mountaineers.   In true Californian fashion, the jewish, Austrian emigré Stroheim is, like the flamboyant characters he portrays, a self-re-invention, embroidering his own biography while burnishing his film persona as a detested war criminal in American propaganda films with alternate villainous roles in his own films--as charlatan, grifter and in the case of Blind Husbands, sexual predator.  Always looking sharp in a monocle and Austrian officer garb, he's a confusion of Hollywood fantasy and a make-believe reality familiar to all Californians.     Event:  Stroheim masterpiece, BLIND HUSBAND, silent film from 1919 Date: Sunday, November 1st Location:  the California Alpine Lodge, along the ridge at 730 Panoramic Hwy, Mill Valley.   Doors open at 4:00pm for the first showing at 4:30pm and 6:30pm for the second showing at 7pm The event will end at 9pm.   Tickets are on sale now!  Available  at $30 each through the LINK above or the attached Zeffy QR code.  They are considered a donation  towards the preservation of the West Point Inn and the public access to Mount Tamalpais it supports.  As such, cancellations will not be refunded.
